Competent Roofer

Competent Roofer NFRC Dual Member

Competent Roofer is the Government-authorised Competent Person Scheme for England and Wales that allows professional roofing contractors to self-certify that their roof refurbishment work complies with Building Regulations. The scheme encompasses all roofing types for domestic, industrial and commercial properties and is open to all roofing contractors to apply. Many jobs undertaken need to be notified to and authorised by Local Authority Building Control (LABC) and in many cases this includes work done to your roof. By using a CompetentRoofer member, property owners will save not only time and money but will have the added reassurance that the work carried out meets the exacting standards of the Building Regulations.

  • Regulation – CompetentRoofer members are compliant and up to date with the Building Regulations.
  • Reliability – CompetentRoofer members are professional contractors who are thoroughly audited and inspected prior to acceptance and undergo regular inspections thereafter.
  • Reassurance – Domestic roofing works registered via CompetentRoofer automatically receive a 10 year insurance-backed insolvency guarantee (also available for commercial/industrial works).

How it works

CompetentRoofer member companies are able to self certify that their roof refurbishment work is compliant with the Building Regulations. They do this by registering works via CompetentRoofer prior to starting the job, then notifying it as complete once finished. CompetentRoofer will then send a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate direct to the building owner and notify the Building Control department of the relevant Local Authority that the work has been completed. Insurance-backed insolvency guarantees are included in the cost of notification for all domestic works, and are available for commercial and industrial works upon request.

Frequently Asked Questions?

Q: If I use a CompetentRoofer, how will I know that the work complies with Building Regulations?

A: To become a CompetentRoofer, roofing contractors are required to demonstrate their understanding of Building Regulations; members are also kept updated of any changes to the regulations. By joining the CompetentRoofer Scheme, the contractor has pledged to abide by the Building Regulations and will be subjected to random inspections on his ‘work in progress’ to ensure that standards are being upheld.

On completion of your roofing work you will be issued with a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate by post (direct from the CompetentRoofer administration team); you must keep this certificate in a safe place as it is likely to be required when you come to sell your home.

Q: How is the scheme controlled?

A: CompetentRoofer is authorised by The Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) and run by The National Federation of Roofing Contractors Limited (NFRC) Ltd.

Q: Will I get a Warranty?

A: All domestic roof refurbishments up to a value of £50,000 will be automatically issued with a 10 year warranty. Rates are available for 15 & 20 year warranties; contact your CompetentRoofer contractor for details. Insurance warranties are also available for large, industrial and commercial projects.
